Ever since Doflamingo was captured at the end of Dressrosa, people have been wondering if he will escape. Some people even consider it to be a question of not if, But when?
Let's consider the possibilities.
The first thing that I think is important is how confident Doflamingo seemed when he was captured.
Instead of being concerned, or even angry. He simply warned Tsuru that taking him out was a mistake.
He was holding the reins of the monsters in this world.
The next thing that stands out is that Doflamingo requests a daily newspaper to 'keep him from getting bored.'
On the surface, this is just so he can keep up with what's going on outside, but it could also be a way to get messages in & out of Impel Down.
If it is possible for Doflamingo to get messages in & out of Impel Down, then that would help in any escape effort.
That leads us to the next consideration. Who will help him? If anyone?
First, let's consider the people who are also imprisoned in Impel Down that might help in causing another mass break out.
The first person that I think everyone would consider, is Bon Clay.
Since he stayed behind after the last breakout, he has replaced Ivankov as Queen of 5.5
If a break out were to happen, it seems inevitable that Bon Clay would hear about it & get involved.
They likely still have access to the stolen surveillance equipment that Ivankov set up when they founded Level 5.5
Interestingly, newspapers are also mentioned here. This seems like it might be relevant to the how the new break out scheme will 'unfold'.
As a less relevant tangent. Look at the tattoo on this person's arm.
Doflamingo's Crew.
If Doflamingo attempts to break out, then he will almost certainly release members of his crew who are also imprisoned there.
This would be an almost direct parallel to what Crocodile did.
Doflamingo's crew have been mentioned quite a bit in Egghead arc & it was mentioned that they were all imprisoned in Impel Down.
It seems likely that this is indirectly alluding to them escaping in the near future.
The Guards.
It is also possible that Doflamingo could illicit help from the guards themselves.
Considering Doflamingo's previous position of power, it would not be surprising at all if he already had people on the inside.
Interestingly, there is a detail that appears only in the anime, during episode 430; where a group of guards are playing cards & one of them draws this card.
It's certainly a reach to say this means anything in particular, but it creates an interesting implication.
In theory, all it would take is one guard to steal the keys to Doflamingo's cuffs & then Doflamingo himself would quite easily be able to take over the control room with his puppeteering abilities.
Cross Guild
This is probably the theory that most people subscribe to at the moment. The idea that Cross Guild will raid Impel Down & free Doflamingo.
Their actual target may be Weevil, on the request of Bakkin, but this would still be a convenient opportunity for Doflamingo.
Previously, I've explored the idea that Bakkin may approach the Cross Guild and give them a contract to go after Greenbull.
Using Whitebeard's inheritance as promised payment, Bakkin may also include rescuing Weevil in the price.
If this were to happen, which is think is one of the most likely possibilities; then Doflamingo may join up with the Cross Guild.
This would then mean that 4/5 of the former warlords shown in this panel from Roger's execution in chapter 0 are now in alliance.
This situation could lead to a reunion between Crocodile & Doflamingo & a call back to the scene in which Doflamingo asked Crocodile to join him.
With the situation reversed, will Doflamingo join Crocodile & the Cross Guild?
The World Government.
The last possibility to consider on the subject of who might help Doflamingo escape is the WG themselves.
Doflamingo warned them that they'd regret imprisoning him & that might just be true.
We know that they apparently sent an assassin to take him out.
This may be the most simple and outrageous possibility, but it is genuinely possible & perhaps even likely that the WG themselves will release Doflamingo.
If they can't kill him, then Imu might think it best to keep Doflamingo on side, so that the secret he knows stays hush.
With how Doflamingo might escape & whom might help him considered. Let's consider the matter of when.
With Doflamingo keeping up with outside news, it seems that he is waiting for a particular moment before breaking out.
But what?
I believe that the moment that Doflamingo is anticipating is the existence of Imu being exposed to the world.
It seems like that is exactly what Oda is setting up for the finale of Egghead arc.
Interestingly, this once again connects back to the subject of cards.
Some of you will remember, that I have spoken before about the potential relevance of the tower card that appeared in chapter 1029. 'The Tower'.'.
If all of these apparent implications are true, then this would mean that the existence of Imu will soon be exposed to the world.
I believe that this is the moment that Doflamingo is waiting for.
Before I conclude, there is one last possibility that I would like to mention. This one is certainly a reach but it's very cool.
What if the person who helps Doflamingo is the man marked by flames?
Perhaps this has been hinted at indirectly. Remember that tattoo from earlier?
To conclude. I think it is inevitable that Doflamingo will escape & there are plenty of viable ways it could happen.
Personally, the scenario I'd like to see most is Doffy joining Cross Guild
But part of me thinks this is where the Man Marked By Flames will take centre stage
